Lowkey... No More Questions

"I lowkey don't have any more questions, Professor Christopher. Thank you so much for the help!" This comment from one of my students last week made me smile.

If you've known me for awhile or have spoken to me for 5 minutes you know that finishing my master's and pursuing teaching has been my goal for a very long time. I am incredibly grateful that the Lord answered both of these prayers in the same year. In August of 2024 I earned my Master of Fine Arts with a concentration in Graphic Design from Liberty University. Just a few months later, in November, I was honored to receive an online adjunct teaching position at Liberty in the School of Communication & the Arts. For the past year, I have had the pleasure of teaching Digital Imaging, Art Appreciation, and Graphic Design Foundations courses.

It's hard to adequately put into words just how rewarding this past year has been. I've learned so much in such a short amount of time! I love this quote that I read recently from Benjamin Franklin, "Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." Even though the courses are online, I have built many long-lasting relationships with my students and fellow colleagues. Technology, of course, has played a huge role in that. Being able to video chat with a student who lives on the other side of the country, or one who is taking classes while deployed and serving our country on the other side of the world, makes all the difference. I absolutely love talking with students! From answering their assignment questions, helping them brainstorm an idea, or simply praying with them for a sick family member or stressful scenario - it brings me so much joy.

"Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember.

Involve me and I learn."

Benjamin Franklin

Now, I know what you seasoned teachers are thinking. I'm a brand new teacher, all doe eyed and oblivious to the challenges ahead. Maybe so... probably so... definitely so... but just let me sit in my ignorance for a little bit longer. Ignorance is bliss, remember?

Just like anything, I know it's going to get harder. It always does. You begin to doubt yourself. You begin to doubt your choices. You slowly fall into the trap of thinking, "I made a mistake." But the truth is you didn't. The thing might look a different than you expected, but that doesn't mean nothing good can come from it. It doesn't mean God isn't in it. These are two of my favorite Bible verses that are stuck to my computer. I strive to live by them daily... strive being the operative word.

I wanted to share a few examples of student work from the past year (with the student's permission, of course). Seeing each student grow in their skills as we progress through each assignment is extremely rewarding. In this season of thankfulness, I am thankful that the future of Visual Communication is very bright!

Join me next month as we discuss another critical element of graphic design - color! If you have a topic you would like covered or have a question about a project you’re working on, drop me a line. I would love to chat!
